Rubber

It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks for this little knitter, hence my lack of blog posts for which I apologise and will now hopefully make up for! After a most inspirational trip to Florence, I've been finalising colours and ideas for my final collection (sneak peek coming soon..).

I posted a little while ago about the first of 2 projects I did for Pitti Filati (the yarn event I have just visited) so now I think it's time for the second instalment. The title I was given this time was 'Rubber' and my inspiration consisted of imagery of bubble gum and rubber bands.

There was also another title of 'Rags' and this was a piece all about denim.

Umbro 2011

Around March 2011, I attended a design briefing by Umbro, which was about taking inspiration from, and re-inventing 4 of their iconic menswear pieces. The idea of designing menswear initially sent me running for the hills (not a field I'd even contemplated exploring before), however after a shaky start working with the most boring colour palette I'd ever come up with, (I'm not featuring that bit), I decided to break all the rules by thinking football loving men would wear purple and got completely sucked into the project, resulting in my designs being chosen for the winning collection.

  I took my inspiration from the Umbro flicker archive of football shirts, mainly the huge variety of colours and directions of stripes found on the shirts. Following this, I worked on a concept of designing scarves which could sit on top of a football strip for fans to wear when attending a match. I ended up making a final piece which was an interpretation of a jacket lapel, enabling a simple t-shirt to be worn underneath which would then look far smarter and more exciting with the addition of the scarf.

  The final collection was a collaboration between Footwear, Menswear, Textile and Vehicle design students from the RCA. As a team we exhibited our pieces in an exhibition alongside the RCA Fashion Shows 2011 in our own Umbro locker room - see below!

Morphogenesis

This is the final collection I did for my BA degree at St. Martins. All machine knitted by yours truly. The concept was all about creatures and objects which change and morph of their own accord, hence the title "Morphogenesis".

And so it begins....

Welcome to the blog of a knitter. I am in my final year at the Royal College of Art, studying a masters in knitted textiles for fashion (both women's and men's wear). I'm starting a blog to express what inspires me and begin unleashing my work on the world. Knitting has been my life for the past few years and will hopefully lead me somewhere wonderful when I graduate in June, but for now I am beavering away working on my final collection of splendiferous knitted garments.
So to get the photos rolling, here's a project I did in the second year of my BA at Central St. Martins. The project is entitled 'Metropolis' and involved a lot a fake grass and cassette tape.
